Strengthening
Communities with Peaceful Resolution Solutions
WHAT
IS RESTORATIVE JUSTICE?
Restorative
Justice addresses the following questions when a low-level crime has been
committed:
What
is the harm?
What
can be done to repair the harm?
Who
is responsible for repairing the harm?
In answering these
questions those harmed and those who caused harm come together to understand
the impact of the crime and to determine how best to restore the individuals
and the community affected by the offense.
Restorative programs also help those who caused harm reintegrate into
their communities by repairing relationships.
Reduced repeated offenses often results from using restorative
processes.
PRINCIPLES OF RESTORATIVE JUSTICE
A
crime is an offense against human relationships.
Those
harmed and the community are central to the justice
process.
The
first priority is to restore those harmed and the community to the greatest
degree possible.
The
person who caused harm has personal responsibility to make amends for the crime
committed.
